If your dog has slowed down, you have already been handed a shelf of options. This is how peptides differ from the supplements sitting next to them, and where supplements are the better answer.
The mechanical difference
Joint supplements supply material. Glucosamine and chondroitin provide building blocks for cartilage. Green-lipped mussel and omega-3s supply anti-inflammatory fatty acids. The premise is that giving the body more raw material helps it maintain the structure. It is a supply-side approach.
Peptides supply instructions. They are signaling molecules, messages telling tissue to repair and inflammation to resolve. The premise is not that your dog is short on material but that the repair signal is not being sent strongly enough.
Neither approach is inherently superior. They address different points in the same problem, which is why they are sometimes used together.
The evidence, side by side
Joint supplements have been studied in dogs for decades. The results are genuinely mixed. Some trials show modest improvement in comfort scores; others show nothing distinguishable from placebo. The most positive data tends to be around omega-3 fatty acids and green-lipped mussel rather than glucosamine, which has repeatedly underperformed its reputation.
Peptides have a research base that is mechanistically stronger and clinically thinner. The rodent tendon-healing work for BPC-157 is more consistent than most glucosamine trials in dogs, and it is in rodents. There are no large randomized controlled trials of peptides in dogs.
So: supplements have more canine data of mixed quality; peptides have better mechanistic data and almost no canine trial data. Anyone claiming a clean win in either direction is overreading.
Oversight and access
This is the most concrete difference, and often the most decision-relevant.
Joint supplements are over-the-counter. You buy them at a pet store, nobody examines your dog, and the regulatory bar for what is in the bottle is low, independent testing has repeatedly found products whose content does not match the label.
Peptide protocols are prescription compounded preparations. A licensed veterinarian must establish a relationship with you and your dog, determine that no approved product meets the need, and write a prescription for your specific animal. A licensed pharmacy prepares it.
That makes peptides harder to get. It also means somebody with a license looked at your dog before anything was dispensed, which is the actual value, and which is exactly what is missing when peptides are bought as research chemicals online.
Cost

That gap is real and worth being honest about. If a supplement is working for your dog, the case for switching is weak. The families who find peptides worth the difference are usually the ones for whom supplements have already been tried and have not been enough.
Where supplements are the better answer
We would rather say this plainly than have you spend money you did not need to:
- Prevention in a healthy young dog. There is no case for a prescription peptide protocol in a dog with no problem. Omega-3s and weight management are the higher-value interventions.
- Mild, early stiffness. Start with the cheaper, easier thing. If it works, you are done.
- When cost is a real constraint. A supplement your dog takes for a year beats a protocol you have to stop after six weeks. Consistency matters more than potency.
- When there is no diagnosis yet. Get the workup first.
Where peptides make more sense
- Supplements have been tried and were not enough. The single most common story we hear.
- There is a specific soft-tissue injury or surgery to recover from. This is where the mechanistic case is strongest.
- The dog is on multiple medications and you want oversight. A veterinarian reviewing the whole picture has value independent of the compound.
- The problem is inflammation-driven rather than structural wear.
Can they be used together?
Yes, and it is common. Omega-3s and a peptide protocol are not in competition, and most of our patients stay on whatever supplement regimen they were already on. Tell your veterinarian everything your dog takes, including the things that came from a pet store, so the whole picture is on the table.
The short version
Supplements are cheap, easy, low-oversight, and modestly evidenced. Peptides are more expensive, prescription-only, mechanistically compelling, and thinly evidenced in dogs specifically.
If you have not tried the cheap thing, try the cheap thing. If you have, and your dog is still slowing down, a conversation with a veterinarian about what else exists costs nothing here.
